If you love road trips then this tour offers you just that. The tour takes you from Accra through the coastal towns of Central and Western Region of Ghana and to the international border between Ghana and Ivory Coast. We will then cross into the Eastern side of Ivory Coast and continue on the coast through Grand Bassam, the colonial French capital and to Abidjan, capital of Ivory Coast. A day’s trip to Yamoussoukro to visit our Lady of Peace Cathedral and return to Abidjan to enjoy the city’s very vibrant nights’ at one of the famous open air bars. Our final day will be in Abidjan, pick up souvenirs and then take a long road trip back to Accra.

Day 1:  Accra – Axim

Depart Accra to Axim. Arrive Axim and visit the triangular-shaped Fort San Antonio, the second oldest fort, constructed by the Portuguese in 1515, after Fort St. Jago in Elmina. San Antonio was conquered by the Dutch in 1642 and its control exchanged hands many times, ending with the British. Overnight in Axim.

Day 2: Axim – Grand Bassam – Abidjan, Ivory Coast

Depart Axim to the Ghana/Ivory Coast border. Go through border formalities and cross into Ivory Coast. Continue to Grand Bassam, Ivory Coast’s old capital. Visit the chief’s palace, with its interesting museum and take a tour of Grand Bassam with its old colonial buildings and atmosphere of yesteryear, explore and learn about the history of this former capital. In the late afternoon visit the lively market at Treichville and the residential area of Cocody of interesting colonial architecture. You will also visit the national museum which contains a fine collection reflecting the rich heritage of 62 ethnic groups. Take a drive through the new quarter of Youpugon and you will see a striking contrast in its architecture. In the evening enjoy a night out in this vibrant city. Overnight in Abidjan. (B)

Day 3:  Abidjan – Yamoussoukro – Abidjan

Today travel to the capital city of Yamoussoukro. It is the home town of Ivory’s coast’s longest serving President, who spent lots of money to develop the city. You will notice the roads, hotels, monuments etc in this rather relatively small town. This town is also home to the Grand Basilica of Our Lady of Peace almost an exact replica of St Peter’s in Rome, reputedly the largest Christian place of worship on earth. Spend time exploring this vast complex and the Grand Mosque. You will also see the Presidential Palace where the late president is buried. Return to Abidjan in the evening (B)

Day 4:  Departure

This morning visit Abobo, where Africa’s largest outdoor launderette (laundry) is located. Witness an amazing sight of hundreds of washer men jam packed together in the middle of a stream to wash clothes. They rub garments on huge stones held in place by car tires then spread the clothes over rocks and grass in a large drying area. Despite the chaos, they never get their clients clothes mixed up or missing. Continue to the border with a stopover at Grand Bassam’s craft market and pick up a few souvenirs. After which we will drive to Ghana, Arrive in Accra in the evening (B)
